How much will your pet cost you over a life time?   Probably more - a lot more - than you think.   The website Totally Money has launched a tool to help understand the lifetime cost of having a pet.

Here's the expected cost for your pet:

  • Cat - $19,500 - includes averages on food, litter, toys, grooming, vet visits, kennels
  • Large Dog - $25,000
  • Small Dog - $29,000

The small dog has a higher average cost since the have a longer life expectancy.

The cheapest pet would be a Goldfish, costing you just $1,180 over their average 7 year lifetime.    While the most expensive would be a tortoise at $36,000, since they can live up to 75 years.
