A New Oceanfront Campground Is Opening In California!

If you love camping, get ready to add a new destination on your list to check out because there's a new oceanfront campground opening in California. It will be located in Fort Ord near Monterey near where an old Army base once was 77 years ago. The oceanfront section of the former base has four miles of sand dunes that hugs Monterey Bay. It will become the first new state park campground of that size built anywhere on the California coast in more than 30 years. According to Superintendent of state parks’ Monterey District, Brent Marshall, "People love these wide open spaces. The sand dunes are so dynamic. There is a long stretch of beach. You can get out on it and walk for hours.”

$25 million is being put into this project as construction will begin this fall with the hopes of it opening in 2022. The plan is to have 98 campsites, half for RV's and half for tents on the edge of the property with a campfire in the center. There will also be community gathering building, beach access trail, Monterey Bay overlooks and interpretive exhibits featuring wildlife and military history. We can't forget about how amazing the view is in every direction, to the south, Cannery Row is visible and to the north, Santa Cruz and Loma Prieta Peak.
