A tourist from New Zealand visiting the Caribbean island of St. Maarten is dead after taking part in a dangerous but popular tourist activity.
The Island's Princess Juliana International Airport is a popular destination for tourists because of its location, which sits just off of Maho Beach. There are always crowds on the beach watching arriving planes fly as low as 100 feet overhead. There are also people who stand at the barrier fence of the airport and hold on as planes rev up their engines to prepare for departure.
One tourist tried to withstand the force of the engine's exhaust and couldn't hold onto the fence. She was blown back and slammed into a concrete barrier. Others tried to help her, but she was killed on impact.
A similar incident occurred in 2012 when a woman was blown into the concrete barrier, but she survived. That one was captured on video.
