It was the first collaboration of its kind and ended up raising $24 million dollars to help the hungry in Africa. Plus, it spawned USA for Africa and the Live Aid concerts that added in an addition $150 million to fight world hunger.
Written by Bob Geldof, the lead singer of the group The Boomtown Rats ("I Don't Like Mondays"), Band Aid was actually the idea of his partner Paula Yates. 36 musicians, some of the biggest stars of the 80s like Boy George, Sting, Phil Collins and Bono all were a part of Band Aid. The most surprising member of the group may have been the 3 members of Kool & the Gang, the only Americans on the song.
