Here's happy 81st birthday wishes to Mickey Mouse!
On this date in 1938, Mickey Mouse made his debut in the cartoon "Steamboat Willie," which premiered at the Colony Theater in New York City. "Steamboat Willie" was actually the third of Mickey's films to be produced, but was the first to be distributed. According to Wikipedia the cartoon was selected for preservation in the United States' National Film Registry in 1994 for being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." And, In 1994, members of the animation field voted Steamboat Willie 13th in the book The 50 Greatest Cartoons, which listed the greatest cartoons of all time.
