Without a doubt, one of the most rewarding things this job has provided me is the opportunity to meet and help some of the MUSC Miracle Kids and their families.
In July of 2015, I had the honor, and I do mean honor, of meeting Stephanie Lee and her daughter Abigail. Abby was born with mosaic Down syndrome and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. That's a condition in which parts of the left side of the heart don't completely develop. Before she was 4 years old, she had already had two major heart surgeries and was preparing for a third when tests revealed she had acute myeloid leukemia.
This young girl and her family beat the leukemia, and have been fighting Abby's heart challenges. Earlier this year, it was determined she would need a heart transplant. As I write this, she is halfway through that procedure at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital.
I have never heard Stephanie or Abby complain, despite all they've been through. You will not meet a more loving, caring, and wonderful family. Stephanie is always positive and an amazing mom, with a daughter who has a big heart that is now failing her.
So please join me and say a little prayer for Abby and her family to help another MUSC miracle happen.
