On this date in 1878 the first telephone directory, consisting of a single page, was issued. It covered 50 subscribers in New Haven, Connecticut.

Certainly a generational thing - does any teenager remember ever looking in a phone book? If you're old enough to have used a phone book, when the phone books came out after you got your first phone, did you check so that you could see your name in black and white? Of course you did!
