Lady Gaga has returned to the stage.  She performed her new single "Applause" at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.

Her comeback kicked off the night, which started with Gaga's face against what appeared to be a white background.  As the camera zoomed out, it was revealed that the white was part of her outfit, the first of several over-the-top stage costumes she donned during the performance.  She changed in and out of wigs and eventually ended up in the barely-there mermaid-inspired bikini outfit that appears in the video for "Applause."  She kept in on for the rest of the night.

Gaga wasn't up for any awards, but she was later shown cheering on Justin Timberlake's performance as well as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' acceptance speech when they won an award for their song "Same Love," which speaks about gay rights.  Gaga later tweeted that the rapper was "amazing."  She also announced on the red carpet that rapper Too Short would be one of the hip-hop artists to be featured on her upcoming album ARTPOP, out in November.
