From our News Partners at WCBD-TV:
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is taking over the investigation for an officer-involved shooting in downtown Charleston.
Charleston police tell us the officer is on administrative leave, which is normal for any officer involved in such an incident.
It is typical that SLED investigates when an officer fires their weapon, and in this case agents confirm it was fatal. They only add the officer is OK but details about the deceased must come from the coroner who was not immediately available Saturday.
Consolidated dispatch said police responded to shots fired about 10:30 Friday night to the 100 block of North Romney Street.
News 2 on the scene witnessed police at the Bridgeview Village Apartment Complex block off parts of North Romney Street, not allowing people to drive in or out until early morning hours.
Once News 2 was allowed to access the scene Saturday morning, residents of the complex told us there was just one gunshot and the victim was possibly a young male. Police nor SLED have confirmed those details.
There are surveillance cameras at the complex but the office was closed, so News 2 could not get access to the video.
This is the 23rd officer-involved shooting in South Carolina this year.
