North Charleston Police have arrested the man who is accused of raping a patient at the Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health Center last week.

Ricardo Powell, 27, was arrested Thursday evening. He is being charged with 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct.

According to police on June 12 the victim's roommate told officers she awoke to hear a man's voice in their room. At first, the roommate thought the voice was that of a worker's, but when she stood up in bed, she noticed a man on top of the victim.

The roommate told police she yelled at Powell to get off the victim.  Powell then allegedly attempted to attack the roommate, but she pushed him away and out of the room.  She then pressed the call button inside the room to notify the staff.

The victim told authorities that she didn't remember the assault because she had taken her sleeping medication.

Officials with the Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health Center released this statement following the incident:

"The management and staff of Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health are committed to providing the best possible treatment to its patients and take their safety and well-being very seriously.
