The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating after a Hanahan police officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect in North Charleston.

According to a spokesman for the Hanahan Police Department, police were making a routine traffic stop late Monday night.

When the car stopped, one of the people in the car took off running.

After a short chase, police said the suspect exchanged up to 15 rounds with police. No officers were injured. Police have not confirmed if the suspect was shot.

Police arrested three of the occupants in the car. Their charges are pending due to the ongoing investigation.

Police and investigators from several agencies are on the scene near Dakota Street.
